Timeline from 1889 to now

1889

Clemens and Therese Sontheim acquire the property at number 168 and establish a wine restaurant there.

 

1901

Albert and Amalie Fendt buy the wine restaurant and continue to run it as a wine tavern and wine shop, but gradually expand it as the "Weinstube und Café Fendt".

 

1935

The only surviving Fendt daughter, Senzi, takes over the wine bar with her husband Xaver Greinwald.

 

1936

After Senzi Greinwald's death in 1935, Xaver Greinwald and his second wife Else begin the first major remodelling work.

 

around 1945

The pub is now called "Café und Weinstube Greinwald".

 

1945

Café Greinwald becomes a casino: the staff of the American military administration meets daily for lunch at Café Greinwald.

 

1953

Second major renovation with expansion and modernisation of the guest rooms.

 

1954

Café Greinwald's carnival balls become highlights in the town's events calendar in the following years.

 

1955

Xaver Greinwald dies, his daughter Elfriede succeeds him and the pub is now leased to Hans Ortmann.

 

1965

Elfriede Greinwald marries Otto Batzer and undertakes the third major remodelling project with her husband: the attic is extended, the gable is removed, the house is given a hipped roof and a shop is built on the ground floor.

 

1966

The tenant is Nikolaus Bihlmayr.

 

1967

The master confectioner Adolf Seichter leases the café with his wife Waltraud.

 

1976

The Gerlach family becomes the new tenants.

 

1984

The master confectioner Erich Hiemer and his wife Gabriele lease the café and invest in extensive renovation and modernisation.

 

1991

Erich and Gabriele Hiemer buy the building and begin another extensive remodelling and renovation project, returning ownership of Café Greinwald to the people who run it after 36 years of various leases.

 

2010

Café Greinwald is expanded into a café hotel with the addition of a new hotel complex.

 

2019

130 years - wine restaurant, wine bar, café, hotel.
